Ready-to-Go Folios: Utility Folio

Utility Folio

Sector/Industry Main | See All Folios

Objective

The Utility Folio was developed for investors seeking moderate capital appreciation and income with lower volatility.

Strategy

The Utility Folio consists of the same stocks that make up the Dow Jones Utility Average (DJUA)—the largest utility companies defined by market capitalization. It seeks to track the performance of the Dow Utility Average by investing in the same stocks with the same weightings.

Utility companies have historically tended to be less volatile than the overall market and could provide a source of income or provide a hedge during a down market, since consumers are generally reliant on their services.

Steps to Create This Folio

  1. This Folio holds the same securities and weightings as the Dow Jones Utility Average (DJUA) as made available quarterly by the Dow Jones Indexes (published in their Analytics and Research section).
  2. The DJUA is a price-weighted index. That means that each security's weight in the index is determined by its price per share (adjusted to account for stock splits and other changes). Therefore, the higher the price of a given security in the index, the higher the allocation to that security in the index.

Number of Securities

There are generally 15 securities in the Folio.

Update Frequency

Every quarter the Folio is updated with the weights that are published on the Dow Jones Indexes website. Corporate actions, such as a merger, or other significant events may prompt us to change the securities at any time during the quarter.

If the characteristics of the Folio have changed substantially, the securities included may change. Also, corporate actions, such as a merger, or other events may cause changes to the securities held at any time. Your returns may deviate significantly from the values displayed here, due to many factors, including how long after a Folio has been updated that you place orders to update your holdings.
