We have a joint account. Do both account holders have to log in?

Yes. Each account owner will receive an independent copy of their invitation email and must log in separately using his or her unique username, and complete the account opening process. Your account(s) will not be available for trading until both account holders have logged into Folio Investing and completed this process.

PRICING AND BILLING QUESTIONS

Folio Investing provides more features at a price that is comparable to or better than previously offered by BUYandHOLD. You can upgrade pricing plans if you like by going to the Settings page and changing your pricing plan. For example, if you are on the Folio Investing IRA-Only Pricing, and you want to upgrade to the Unlimited Plan, you will be able to do so at any time.

Note that Folio Investing pricing plans apply to you as a customer, even if you have more than one account. For example, if you had a BUYandHOLD Basic Investment Plan account, a BUYandHOLD IRA account, and a BUYandHOLD Moderate Plan account, at Folio Investing you would be under the one single Unlimited Plan pricing plan paying only $29 per month in total covering all your accounts. So, if you have accounts at other brokerages ? you might want to consider moving those over to us as well.

What is my pricing plan at Folio Investing?

  • BUYandHOLD Moderate Investment Plan (MIP) and Diversified Investment Plan (DIP) Accounts will be on the Folio Unlimited Plan for $29 per month. Note: The Folio Unlimited Plan is at the customer level meaning you can have an unlimited number of accounts under the same taxpayer ID number (such as a taxable personal account, a joint account and an IRA account) all for the single $29 per month charge. Consequently, if you had additional accounts at BUYandHOLD, such as IRAs or BUYandHOLD Basic Investment Plan accounts, they will all be set up under your single customer username on the Folio Unlimited Plan. The Folio Unlimited Plan also includes 2,000 commission-free window trades per month across all of your accounts under the same username and tax identification number, and $3 market, limit, stop, and stop/limit orders (what we call direct trades). You can also change to the Folio Unlimited Annual Plan (which provides additional savings) online at anytime from the Settings page. Please note that there is an additional $25 annual IRA fee for each IRA.

  • BUYandHOLD Basic Investment Plan (BIP) Accounts will be on a special Folio Investing $8 per month plan that offers the benefits of the Unlimited Plan (see above) through April 30, 2015 and then offers 3 single-security buy, sell, or auto buy/sell window trades commission-free per month—each additional window trade costs $4 per security, and direct trades cost $10 per security order.

You can elect to continue with the benefits of the Folio Unlimited Plan after April 30th simply by upgrading to the Folio Unlimited Plan online at any time from the Settings page. If you upgrade before April 30th, you will still only be billed $8 per month through April 30th. So if you like the Unlimited Plan benefits, there’s no reason to wait to upgrade. Please note that there is an additional $25 annual IRA fee for each IRA.

  • If you had only an IRA account at BUYandHOLD, your IRA will be on a special Folio Investing IRA pricing plan that offers $2 window trades and $10 direct trades, with a quarterly account service fee of $15 if you make 7 or fewer trades in the prior quarter. There is also a $25 annual IRA fee for each IRA. You can change to the $8 special plan or the Folio Unlimited Monthly or Annual Plans (see above) online at any time. Note: If you had other accounts, in addition to the IRA, converting to Folio Investing, then the IRA will be included under the same pricing plan as your other account(s) at no additional charge except for the $25 annual IRA fee.

Customer Information and Settings

Can I change my Folio username?

No. Your Folio Investing username cannot be changed.

Will IRA beneficiaries set up at BUYandHOLD move to Folio Investing?

Generally yes. However, you should check this information and confirm its accuracy. Do this by selecting the Settings link in the top menu of our site after you log in and then select the Beneficiaries link on the desired IRA account. If anything is not accurate, please update it on this web page.

If you had a Transfer on Death account (TOD or Designated Beneficiary account) at BUYandHOLD you will need to complete and send back to us the Folio Investing TOD form to designate your taxable account beneficiaries.

Is my credit card information being transferred to Folio Investing?

No. But you can pay your monthly or annual membership fees with a credit card. See Changing Pricing Plan and Payment Method.

Is my bank link information being transferred to Folio Investing?

No. To set up bank links for an electronic funds transfer or EFT (also known as ACH) deposit or withdrawal, as well as to setup recurring EFTs, see Creating a New Bank Link.

Can I set up check writing for my account(s) at Folio Investing?

Yes:

  1. Select the Money Transfer link on the Accounts page.
  2. Then select the Setup Check Writing link and follow the detailed instructions on the page.

Important note: Distributions from some types of retirement accounts are not eligible for check writing and require an IRA Distribution Form. When this is the case, the check writing link will not appear on the screen.

Does Folio Investing have an Auto Vest plan similar to BUYandHOLD?

No. Folio Investing allows you to invest in more than a thousand mutual funds as well as exchange-traded funds and equities. Many mutual funds require the cash for purchases to be sent to the funds the next business day. Because cash pulls through the bank link process frequently take two and perhaps even three business days to be received, it is not practical to allow for purchases to be made with cash being pulled only after the trade is placed for the purchase. Consequently, we require cash in an account (or an offsetting sale of securities that will generate at least the required amount of cash) to cover any security purchase.

You can, however, setup a scheduled automatic pull deposit through a bank link at Folio Investing (see Can I setup a recurring cash transfer? above).

Folio Investing Basics

What are folios?

Folios are virtual baskets that you set up to hold groups of stocks, ETFs, mutual funds, or any combination you chose. You can create as many folios as you want and can add up to 100 stocks, ETFs, and/or mutual funds to each one. Folios are a great innovation, and they provide many benefits, even though they may take a few minutes to get used to. Folios allow you to buy, sell, or rebalance securities—including fractional shares—and to trade in dollar as opposed to share amounts, easily and all at once. You can also trade securities in a folio individually. You can create folios, move cash and securities between folios, enable or disable dividend reinvestment for a folio, rename folios and much more. Learn about how folios and window trades work on our Help pages.

What are window trades?

A window trade is an innovative way of placing trades designed for long-term investors. Instead of being executed immediately, trades are grouped together and sent to market—currently, twice a day. Note that mutual funds can be traded in windows and held as part of a folio, but because of the way mutual funds trade, you will always receive the end of day pricing for buys and sells.

Can I trade a single security at Folio Investing like I did at BUYandHOLD?

Yes – you can trade single securities in a window, or in addition to our money-saving window trades, we offer market, limit, stop, and stop-limit trades as well.

What securities can I trade at Folio Investing?

You can invest in almost all securities listed on the major U.S. equity exchanges and in more than 1,000 mutual funds and exchange-traded funds. We also offer a series of unique FDIC-insured cash investment products. Although we do not offer individual bonds, we do offer exchange-listed fixed income ETFs and many closed-end bond funds.

There are a small number of securities available for trading that are not window-tradable and can only be bought and sold with market or limit/stop orders, which you can place on our website.

We do not currently trade foreign listed securities, over-the-counter (OTC), pink sheet, bulletin board, or debt securities, nor do we offer options trading or margin lending.
