Fund an Account: Transfer Rules

*Note: Depending on your user access level, and if you have an advisor who can access your account, some of the functions described here may not be available to you, or may be performed by your advisor.

Overview

With a few exceptions, online money transfers are permitted between accounts that were opened by the same person and share the same social security or tax ID number. The scenarios below best explain the transfer rules.

Transfers between Individual Accounts

Account Ownership Online Transfers
  • You own two individual accounts.
  • They have the same social security or tax ID#.

  • They have the same joint owners.

Transfers between Joint and Individual Accounts

Account Ownership Online Transfers
  • You own an individual account and a joint account.
  • They have the same social security or tax ID#.
  • You can transfer money from the individual account to the joint account.
  • You cannot transfer money from the joint account to the individual account.
  • You own an individual account and you are a joint owner on an account you did not create.
  • They have a different social security or tax ID#.
  • You can transfer money from the individual account to the joint account.
  • You cannot transfer money from the joint account to the individual account.

Transfers between IRA Accounts

You cannot transfer money between IRA accounts online.

Transfers between IRAs and Individual Accounts

Account Ownership Online Transfers
  • You own an individual account and an IRA.
  • They have the same social security or tax ID#.
  • You can transfer money from your individual account to the IRA.
  • You cannot transfer money from the IRA to the individual account online.

Transfers between IRAs and Joint Accounts

Account Ownership Online Transfers
  • You own a joint account and an IRA.
  • They have the same social security or tax ID#.
  • You can transfer money from the joint account to the IRA.
  • You cannot transfer money from the IRA to the joint account online.
  • You are a joint owner on an account you did not create and you own an IRA.
  • They have a different social security or tax ID#.
  • You can transfer money from the joint account to the IRA.
  • You cannot transfer money from the IRA to the joint account online.

Transfers to or from Custodial Accounts

  • You can transfer money from an individual account to a custodial account online if you created the custodial account.
  • You cannot transfer money from a custodial account to an individual account online.
  • You cannot transfer money between a joint account and a custodial account online.
  • You cannot transfer money between an IRA and a custodial account online.
